Sometimes the best ideas come from simple
evolutions of basic concepts.
Dr. Hatto Loidl, an orthodontist from Berlin, Germany and Mr. Claus Schendell, owner and engineer of adenta GmbH, together designed a new self-ligating lingual bracket and modified Hiro system called the Evolution slt bracket system. Eliminating the old lingual systems disadvantages, and producing a lingual technique with individual transfer caps, that can be fabricated easily with-out the use of costly equipment using Smart Jig technology. The Smart Jig eliminates the need for indirect bonding trays and simplifies the lingual technique system. Combined with the self-ligating eliminates of the Evolution SLT bracket, this new bracket system is kick starting the next evolution in lingual orthodontics.

Self-ligating bracket eliminates ligature ties
Easy handling and archwire changes
Closing springs are designed as bite planes for the lower incisors
Perfect transmission of torque and angulation
One piece design
Occousal archwire insertion
Significant reduction of chair time
Hygienic situation, the occurrence of decalcification
is dramatically reduced

Opening and Closing the Evolution Bracket

The Evolution bracket can be opened and closed with a modified scaler, or a specially manufactured opening instrument available from Adenta.

The Smart Jig has been designed specifically for use in conjunction with the Evolution Self-ligating Lingual Bracket.
Simplifying the removal of the customized transfer cap after bonding. With the old system a time consuming removal with a low speed stainless steel round bur is used to cut the core at the bracket base. With the Smart Jig this simple device is used to connect the core and the bracket together. Simply remove the ligature tie and the Smart Jig disconnects from the bracket taking the transfer cap with it. This device reduces chair time and simplifies the lingual technique during the bonding stage.

  1. Call Adenta USA at 1-888-942-2070 and speak with our trained staff, discuss how many cases of Evolution brackets you will be needing. At this point you will need to decide if you will be doing your lab setup in-house or if you will be using one of our designated labs.
  2. If you have decided to use one of our designated labs, the Adenta staff will arrange for all Evolution material to be sent to the designated lab. This material will be labeled for your practice with your patients name.
  3. You can contact our labs by calling or you can browse their web sites (link to lab summary and lab page of my web site) An order form will be available for you via fax or you can download a PDF version form our labs web site.
  4. Mail to us as possible, this is extremely important, as any imperfection (bubbles) can have a detrimental effect of the your lab set-up.
  5. The lab will return to you in approximately 3 weeks:

  • Your Evolution self-ligating brackets with individual transfer trays.
  • An Exakto-Form Model in perfect occlusion
  • A Stainless Steel .018x.025 ideal archwire template
  • A progression of ideal archwire forms can be also be included at your request

You will now be ready to bond your Evolution Self-ligating Lingual bracket. Each transfer cap is numbered and as they are replicas of each tooth, it is impossible to bond to the incorrect tooth. Please review our lab summary to learn more about this new and exciting technique. Courses are available throughout the year if you would like to learn this new Modified Hiro technique for yourself.

THE HISTORY OF THE EVOLUTION BRACKET
SEVEN STEPS TO PERFECTION

In 1999, after using the self-ligating TIME Bracket for several years, Dr. Hatto Loidl approached Adenta GmbH with the idea to use the same self-ligating clip mechanism for a lingual bracket. One significant new design point was the slot positioning in the upper and lower brackets from 3-3. This design modification allows the arch wire to be inserted from the occlusal plane, ensuring that in deep bite or extraction cases the force will be applied to the metal walls of the slot and not against an elastic ligature. Another very important feature was the self-ligation aspect. With normal lingual brackets an arch wire change is very time consuming and always requires a longer appointment time in an orthodontic practice. With the self-ligating lingual Evolution LT bracket, the arch wire change is even quicker than a wire change using elastics and buccal brackets .After 10 months of design and testing, the first generation of self-ligating lingual brackets were sent to Dr. Hatto Loidl for in-patient treatment trials. After some design and form changes the Evolution LT, 2nd Generation was launched to the market in 2001.The treatment with the Evolution LT bracket was very quick and successful, but after more than 150 cases were finished, we put all the feedback from our customers together and redesigned the Evolution SLT bracket with the following modifications.

  1. More torque in the upper and lower anteriors.
  2. The original idea to create a thinner customized base, specially for major anatomical differences in the lingual surfaces worked well, but in more than 60% of the crown forms the customized base could be even thinner if the torque was enlarged. This experience leads us to the conclusion that we need a higher base torque for 60% of the patients (average cases), and also a low torque bracket for the anatomical variations
    in crown shapes.
  3. We changed the upper centrals and laterals from 45° base torque to 60°.
  4. We changed the lower centrals and laterals from 35° base torque to 60°.
  5. The low torque bracket still has 40° base torque.
  6. Due to the short inter-bracket distance and the position of the lingual bracket, overpowering of the tooth roots can occur. Our spring clip provides about 550 grams of force on the arch wire, which is an equal amount of force to a new elastic ligature. On the other hand, the spring clip is powerful enough to keep an arch wire in the slot. This gave us the idea of introducing the safety release feature in the Evolution SLT bracket. If you apply more than 600 grams of force on the bracket, the spring clip will slowly release the arch wire out of the bracket slot. Due to the deeper slot it is easy to ligate the arch wire in the bracket, because the spring clip will give more space to the arch wire to slide in the bracket slot, especially on rotated teeth.
  7. The Evolution SLT, 3rd generation was also optimized in the buccal-lingual dimension as a low profile bracket. The buccal-lingual height is only 2.1mm, which is a lot lower than most brackets currently on the market.
